I. LIMBO: A place of monotony, here the souls are punished to wander in restless existence while they moan helplessly in echoes between the ruins of a temple.

II. LUST: Surrounded by erotic representations, those overcome by lust are forced to watch and experience disgusting things, ultimately being condemned to drown in the menstrual river.

III. GLUTTONY: The circle itself is a living abomination, a hellish digestive system revealing horrific faces with mouths ready to devour the gluttons over and over for eternity.

IV. GREED: This pompous place is reserved for the punishment of the greedy ones.

V. ANGER: In this depressing place the souls are trapped in the swamp, they can’t move and they cannot manifest their frustration which is making them even more angry.

VI. HERESY: The giant demon watches closely over his fire pit, dwarfing the damned that are dragging the new arrivals in the boiling lava. Those who committed the greatest sins against God are getting a special treatment inside the temple where they are doomed to burn for eternity in the scorching flames.

VII. VIOLENCE: A place of intense torture where the horrific screams of the damned are eternally accompanied by the hellish beats of drums.

VIII. FRAUD: In Fraud the Demons enjoy altering the shape of souls, this is how they feed.

IX. TREACHERY: Lucifer lies here chained by the Angelic Seal which keeps him captive in the frozen environment.

ST:ID Redux: Against Lindelof

So after an uncomfortable week of being nearly the sole defender of Star Trek: Into Darkness in my peer group, I’ve been doing some more reading and some more thinking. Some of what I’ve read has been a couple of interviews or statements from writer Damon Lindelof, and I’m beginning to wonder why this guy hasn’t had his license revoked.

It’s not that he writes scripts with huge gaping holes (as you’ll see in a moment, I don’t always consider that fatal). It’s that he doesn’t appear to care that he does so. He laughs it off. He treats any attempts at serious questions about films he works on as a huge joke. It’s a very contemptuous attitude - he seems to me to be saying, “oh, god, these people who actually want to take films seriously, aren’t they just a scream?”

Which is one thing if you’re making films where the audience is not expected to bring their brain, but quickly becomes a problem if they do.

I have seen three films that have Lindelof’s greasy fingerprints all over their scripts. The first one, Cowboys and Aliens, is the sort of film where bringing your brain is a definite disadvantage. It’s a hunk of Fun Cheese - you’re not supposed to think, just enjoy the ride. That’s the spirit in which I approached the film, and I enjoyed it, and I didn’t think it got a fair shake (I’m apparently one of the few people who liked it) … which I was inclined to dismiss, at the time, as people not realizing what kind of film they were attending. In other words, if you subjected the film to any sort of actual scrutiny, you were wrong. The end.

But the second film was Prometheus, and I was greatly disappointed with it, not just because of Lindelof’s script but because Ridley Scott, a director I have considerable respect for, was apparently willing to say “fuck it, I’m taking the cash and running,” and okay the script. I expect better from Scott, who I had down as a director who Pays Attention; I had no reason to expect better from Lindelof, but I’m still not clear on why he was allowed anywhere near that film. Prometheus is supposed to have been just a little bit too cerebral a film to get away with Lindelof’s blithe handling. The whole point of bringing another film to the Alien/Blade Runner universe is that universe is supposed to be a little more grounded, a little more coherent, a little deeper than most film SF universes.

So, coming back to ST:ID, the question is whether you feel you are supposed to bring your brain to this universe. My initial reaction was that I was not supposed to, so I didn’t … but I gather many of you disagree. I never particularly thought the Star Trek universe was a “bring your brain” sort of universe, as I’ve already noted; again, many of you seem to disagree. This is where the gap is.

I do agree with this: If you do bring your brain to ST:ID you are likely to be disappointed. It simply doesn’t work if you do, and I lay the blame for that primarily on Lindelof, not on Abrams.

Then again, Abrams seems to have a history of liking/preferring to work with Lindelof and is apparently the person mainly responsible for Lindelof’s career, so that’s not to say he has nothing to answer for.

I have nothing to say about the men’s clothing because men’s non-casual clothing never ever ever changes, which is to say it is boring.

But I do want to talk about her pants.

The jodhpur-cut pants have never been attractive on anyone, of any gender, ever, and if I were Queen of the Universe they would be banned.

I gather from the general demeanor and her carrying his briefcase that she is supposed to be doing Hot Mary Quant Chauffeur Cosplay, and if that’s what enlivens their love life, okay by me. But LOSE THE JODHPURS. And yes, I know they are fairly traditional for the Stiff British Chauffeur, but I don’t care. NO JODHPURS.

Tamara Geva was a Balanchine dancer who married actor John Emery after he divorced Tallulah Bankhead in 1941. This is relevant because later in her life, Tamara became one of a stable of women romantically involved with cross-dressing, high-flying du Pont heiress Louisa D’Andelot Carpenter- this stable included Tallulah’s sister Eugenia.

Louisa liked her women to be straight-identifying, and many of them continued to be, even after moving onto Louisa’s vast Delaware estate, prompting Tallulah to judge her sister’s association with Carpenter thusly: “My sister is not a lesbian, she only does it for the money.”

Gay for pay never looked so glamorous!
